I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. There are so many women around the world who are stripped of their human rights because of their gender.Īnd even in countries like the US in which the situation for women is more equal, there are cultural biases that remain in our society and that I think we could benefit from working to end:īecause I am female, I’m expected to aspire to marriage. When I was younger, I was hesitant to label myself a “feminist” because of the negative stereotypes surrounding it and because growing up in the United States I never felt that I was oppressed by being female. “We Should All Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a great essay that explains feminism with the goal of removing the negative stereotypes surrounding it. I could tell from his tone-the same tone with which a person would say, “You’re a supporter of terrorism.” Okoloma looked at me and said, “You know, you’re a feminist.” It was not a compliment.
